  • June 20th, 2019, Final Project Meeting, Cantabria, Spain

The Final Project Meeting of the european project “Energetic Sustainability at the SUDOE Region: PEMFC-SUDOE Network”, took place last June 20th, 2019 at the University of Cantabria (Cantabria, Spain). Dr. Alfredo Ortiz, as project coordinator welcomed all the partners and presented them a summary of the last action that have to be developed in order to finish the project. Afther that the leader of each workpackage presented the main results obtained during the whole project and the prototypes developed in the frame of the project were also presented.

Pierre Carrere presented the work developed in the frame of the PEMFC-SUDOE project, entitled “Simulation of the liquid water formation and transport in Gas Difusion Layers of PEM Fuel Cell”, in the “PhD student workshop” organized in the Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse.

As part of the activitites of the european project “Energetic Sustainability at the SUDOE region: PEMFC-SUDOE Network the workshop “Renewable Hydrogen Energy World” took place on June 20-21, 2019 at the University of Cantabria, during the celebration of the 3rd International Congress of Chemical Engineering ANQUE-ICCE 3.

The event was chaired by Prof. Alfredo Ortiz (Universidad de Cantabria, Spain), Prof. Deborah Jones (Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier, CNRS) and Prof. Carmen Rangel (LNEG - Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia, Portugal), with the support of the Spanish Hydrogen Association AeH2 and the Direção Geral de Energia e Geologia (Portugal).   • ANQUE-ICCE 3- CIBIQ 2019, June 19-21, 2019, Santander, Spain

Several members of the PEMFC_SUDOE project attended the 3rd International Congress of Chemical Engineering – 1st Iberoamerican congress of Chemical Engineering - ANQUE – ICCE 3 – CIBIQ, celebrated in Santander last. María José Rivero, Juan Corredor and María Yáñez, on behalf of the University of Cantabria, presented the works: “Comparative Performance of TiO2-rGO Composites on the Photocatalytic Degradation of Halogenated Organic Compounds”; “Composite Nafion membranes with supported reduced graphene oxide rGO/TiO2 photocatalysts”; and “High-purity hydrogen production by PSA technology from ammonia purge”, respectively.
On behalf of the UPorto, Tiago Lagarteira and Adélio Mendes presented the works “Production of hydrogen from MSR using CuPd/ZrO2 catalysts – influence of the catalytic surface on methanol conversion and CO selectivity.” and “Membrane and adsorption based hydrogen purification processes for PEMFC applications”, respectively, while Pierre Carrere, on behalf of INPT presented the work “On the impact of the anode operating conditions on the liquid water distribution in the cathode gas diffusion layer of a PEM fuel cell.” Moreover, from LNEG, Alexandra Esteves presented the work “Deactivation and regeneration of Pt-Titania-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites as catalysts in the photochemical generation of Hydrogen” and Prof. Carmen Rangel, presented the work “New modified Nafion-biphosphonic acid composite membranes for enhanced proton conductivity and PEMFC performance”, developed by F. C. Teixeira, A. I. De Sá, A. P. S. Teixeira, F.M. Ortiz-Martínez, A. Ortiz, I. Ortiz and C. M. Rangel, and received the award to the Best Poster for this work.
Apria Systems also participated in the congress as a comercial exhibitor, where showed to the audience the two transport prototypes developed by them in the frame of the PEMFC_SUDOE project, the H2 bike and the radiocontrol truck.

  • Dissemination Event

kreativeCarmen Rangel, from LNEG, on behalf of PEMFC-SUDOE project attended the dissemination event of the project KrEaTive Habitat, funded by the Interreg SUDOE programme. The KrEaTive habitat Project aims at promoting the joint investigation applied to the different materials that integrate the architectural Habitat Sector trough the proximity, adapting and validating KET (advanced materials, nanotechnology and biotechnology). Through these Technologies the Project aims at improving the technical response of the materials and also to include new characteristics, that have never been seen before in these materials and that allow to make them more appealing to be used in Architecture, design and in general in creative industries. During the event, researchers of several Interreg Sudoe projects presented their works. Carmen Rangel was in charge or presenting the Interreg SUDOE project : PEMFC-SUDOE Network.

  • 21 May 2019 - The future of Polymer Chemistry, South Korea

Bruno Amerduri, from CNRS, has recently participated in the symposium “The future of Polymer Chemistry”, celebrated in Korea. During the symposium, celebrated on May 21st, 2019, they presented the work “A Journey from the Synthesis of Functional 2-Trifluoromethacrylate Monomers to their Radical Copolymerizations with Vinylidene Fluoride, and Applications”.

  • PEMFC-SUDOE Prototype

The construction of the second transport prototype developed within European project PEMFC Sudoe is already finished consisting of a radio control truck powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology.

  • May 6 2019 - Short Research Stay

6MayVítor Ramiro de Almeida Fernandes, researcher of the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG, Portugal) visited the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria, from May 6 to 10, 2019. During his visit he is working in the development and characterization of new and highly efficient catalysts and membranes for fuel cell and electrolizer systems, under the supervision of Alfredo Ortiz. This visit was possible thanks to the european project PEMFC-SUDOE in which both institutions are involved.

Alfredo Ortiz, coordinator of the project “Energetic Sustainability at the SUDOE Region: PEMFC-SUDOE Network”  attended the Engineering with membranes conference – EWM 2019, that was held in Båstad, Sweden on April 8-10, 2019, where he presented the work entitled “Novel proton conductive membranes based on poly([HSO3-BVIm][TfO]-co-MMA) and poly([HSO3- BVIm][TfO]-co-hPFSVE) for fuel cell applications”.

  • April 4th, 2019 - Roadtrip at the ETSIIT of the University of Cantabria, Cantabria, Spain

On April 4th, 2019 Interreg Sudoe Program organized a Roadtrip at the ETSIIT of the University of Cantabria, aimed at presenting the Interreg SUDOE Program to students of the Chair Jean Monnet of the University of Cantabria. This event was organized in the frame of the Cooperation Days of Interreg Sudoe Program by the Joint Secretariat of the Interreg SUDOE Program. The event was attended by Isabelle Roger, Head of the Joint Secretariat of Interreg SUDOE Program, Andrea Rodríguez, responsible for Communication and Capitalization of the Joint Secretariat of Interreg SUDOE Program; Alexandre Le Gall, project manager of the Joint Secretariat of Interreg SUDOE Program; Juan Llanes Cavia from the Management Authority of the Interreg Sudoe Program and Ana Carrera Poncela, from the Board of Directors of the Management Company of the Interreg South-West European Space SL

During the event, Andrea Rodríguez, talk about the International Cooperation: INTERREG SUDOE PROGRAM. After that, a round table took place with the participation of the coordinators of the projects: REPARP, SUDOE STOP CO2, THICHRON and PEMFC_SUDOE. After the round table, the students had the opportunity of asking the coordinators about the specific projects. Then, Alfredo Ortiz, coordinator of PEMFC_SUDOE project, presented the project in a more detailed way and after that the students had the opportunity of visiting the labs in which the PEMFC_SUDOE project is performed in the University of Cantabria. Moreover, the H2 bike prototype, developed as on deliverable of PEMFC_SUDOE Project, was presented to the audience.

Tiago Lagarteira, from the University of Porto and Pierre Carrere, from the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, attended the 8th International Conference on Fundamentals and Development of Fuel Cells – FDFC 2019, celebrated in Nantes (France) from February 12 to 14, 2019. In the congress, Tiago Lagarteira delivered the conference “Nature of the high stability of Graphene-supported catalysts upong accelerated stress tests for fuel cells: electrochemical and physicochemical evidences”. This work has been developed by researchers of LEPABE (Laboratory for process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (Portugal) in collaboration with researchers of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria (Spain), in the frame of the european project Energy sustainability at the SUDOE Region: Red PEMFC-SUDOE. Moreover, Pierre Carrere presented the work “Liquid water formation in cathode gas diffusion layers of PEMFC: the three scenarios”, developed by Pierre Carrere and Marc Prat.

 

  •  January 14th – April 19th, 2019 - Research Stay, University of Porto, Portugal

research stayMaría Yáñez, researcher of the PEMFC-SUDOE project in the University of Cantabria team, is currently developing a pre-doctoral research stay at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto (Portugal). During this period (January 14th – April 19th, 2019) she will work in an experimental and modeling study for producing hydrogen of fuel cell quality from industrial waste was mixtures based on pressure swing adsorption (PSA), under the supervision of Prof. Adélio Mendes.

 

  •  21 November 2018 - APRIA H2 Bike Prototype at the workshop “Challenges for the Implementation of Hydrogen as an Energy Vector", Portugal

bicycleH2 bike prototype developed by APRIA within European project PEMFC-SUDOE has been promoted last 21st November in Lisbon during the workshop “Challenges for the Implementation of Hydrogen as an Energy Vector in Portugal. Towards a RoadMap for Research, Development and Technology Innovation” organized in the framework of H2_PT project, coordinated by LNEG and co-financed by POSEUR.

María Yáñez, researcher of the University of Cantabria team, presented the poster to the audience and delivered the project brochure to contribute to the difussion activities of the project.

 

  •  September 2018 - APRIA Systems prototype

bicycleAPRIA Systems completes the construction of an integrated PEMFC prototype (proton exchange membrane) for its application in the transport sector within the Interreg PEMFC-SUDOE project. An electric bicycle has been developed integrating a fuel cell to generate electricity from hydrogen towards more sustainable mobility alternatives.

 

  •  EuroScience Open Forum – July 11, 2018, Toulouse, France

eurosciencePEMFC-SUDOE partners from Institut National Polytechnique of Toulouse participated in the EuroScience Open Forum, which took place in Toulouse (France). They opened their laboratory on July 11th, 2018 to show the different research fields studied. The main thematic of the event was “Green Engineering”. As member of the PEMFC-SUDOE project, they organized a demonstration workshop to present the technologies developed for the hydrogen sector (fuel cells and electrolysis).

bootcampAlfredo Ortiz, as coordinator of the european project “Energetic Sustainability at the Sudoe region: PEMFC-SUDOE network, attended the 2018 Advocacy Boot Camp celebrated in Faro (Portugal), on June 28 – 29, 2018. The aim of the event was to train partners in the promotion and lobbying in the marketing and capitalization actions of on-going Interreg-Sudoe projects. The participants were trained in specific strategies, political influence, storytelling and digital communication.

 

  •  Fluoropolymer 2018 – June 24-27, 2018, Denver, USA

ameduriBruno Ameduri, from the French National Center for Scientific Resarch (CNRS), attended the Fluoropolymer 2018 that took place in Denver (USA), on June 24-27, 2018. During the conference, a session was devoted to fuel cell membranes. Bruno participated as chairman and he also presented the work “Recent Advances on Controlled Radical Polymerization of Fluoroalkenes and Architectures Therefrom” and “Alkyl and Fluoroalkyl Manganese Pentacarbonyl Complexes as Models of OMRP Dormant Species”.

whec2018Alfredo Ortiz and Daniel Gorri attended the 22nd World Hydrogen Energy Conference (WHEC2018), celebrated in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) last June 17-22, 2018, where they presented the works “Contribution of upcycling surplus hydrogen to design a sustainable supply chain: The case study of Northern Spain”.

 

  •  Follow-Up Project Meeting – May 25th, 2018, Palavas, France

palavasLast May 25th, 2018 the Annual Follow-up Meeting of the project "Energetic Sustainability at the SUDOE Region: PEMFC-SUDOE Network" took place. Partners from CNRS organized the event in Le Phare de la Mediterranee Centre des Congress in Palavas-les-Flots (Montpellier, France). Dr. Alfredo Oritz, as project coordinator, opened the meeting and presented an overview of coordination, management and financital aspects. After that, project partners presented the progress made during the last period in the different workpackages. Then, Alfredo also presented the progresses related to dissemination and communication activities and finally after discussing about different ítems and stablishing the next project meeting, the close of the meeting took place.

 

  •  European Conference on Fluid-Particle Separation – FPS 2018, October 2018, Lyon, France

FPS2018Two contributions of project partners from have been accepted to participate in the European Conference on Fluid-Particle Separation – FPS 2018, that will be held in Lyon (France) next October, 2018. R. Peinador, I. Haffar and R. Ben Aim, researchers from the Institut de la Filtration et des Techniques Séparatives (IFTS, France) will present their work “Influence of swelling and pressure compaction on polymeric UF membrane by liquid liquid displacement porometry. An experimental study”. Marc Prat, researcher of the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (INPT, France) in collaboration with R. Peinador (IFTS, France) will present their work “Fluid-fluid porometr, pore network simulation”.

 

  •  Interpore Conference on Pororus Media – JEMP 2018, October 8-10, 2018, Nantes, France

René Peinador, from the Institut de la Filtration et des Techniques Séparatives (IFTS, France) within Marc Prat, from the Institut National Polytechnique of Toulouse (INPT, France) have prepared a contribution to participate in the congress French Interpore Conference on Pororus Media – JEMP 2018. The congress will take place next October 8-10, 2018 in Nantes (France). The work that they will present in the congress is entitled “Analysis of fluid-fluid porometry from pore network simulations”.

  •  European Regional Workshop on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, 24 April 2018, Madrid, Spain

EHEC2018 bisOn April 24th, 2018 the General Directorate of Innovation, Technological Development and Industrial Entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the European Technology Platform for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, organized by the “European Regional Workshop on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells. The event took place in the meeting room of the Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Tourism and Commerce (Madrid). The workshop was, aimed at stablishing the existing guidelines for supporting projects related to hydrogen technologies in the regions, and counted on the participationit gathered of different European experts of in the sectortopic.
Dr. Alfredo Ortiz participated in the event as coordinator of the european projects “Energy Sustainbility at the SUDOE region: Red PEMFC-SUDOE” and “Atlantic Network for Renewable Generation and Supply of Hydrogen to promote High Energy Efficiency”.

 

  •  European Hydrogen Energy Conference 2018 (EHEC 2018), March 2018, Málaga, Spain

EHEC2018 bisOn March 14-16, 2018 the European Hydrogen Energy Conference – EHEC 2018, the Europe's conference of reference in the field of hydrogen energy, was celebrated in Málaga (Spain). The conference consisted of plenary sessions on the most relevant aspects of technology worldwide and topical technical sessions of oral presentations and posters.
Some of the PEMFC-SUDOE partners attended the EHEC where they presented their main project results. Alfredo Ortiz and María Yáñez, members of the University of Cantabria team presented the lectures “Innovative ionic liquids co-polymers as membrane electrolytes for fuel cell applications” and “Surplus hydrogen reuse using decision-making techniques in northern Spain “, respectively. A. Martínez, E. Montero, D. Solera and M.Rodríguez, on behalf of ARIEMA, presented their work “Present and future markets for hydrogen technology in SUDOE region”.

Paula Ribao performed a predoctoral research internship at the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG) in Lisbon (Portugal) under the supervision of Dr. Carmen Rangel, from September to December 2017. During this period, she worked on the photocatalytic hydrogen production from model and real industrial effluents. The main objective was to evaluate the ability of novel photocatalytic materials to obtain energy from organic wastewaters. This internship was able thanks to the collaborations established in the frame of the project PEMFC-SUDOE.

Rober Ben Aim and René Peinador, from IFTS (France), attended the Francofilt 2017 celebrated in Bordeaux (France) from 29 to 31 August 2017, where they presented the work “Utilisation de la porosimétrie bi-liquide pour carcteériser les membranes MF/UF et étudier les phénomènes capillaires et de mouillage des membranes de piles à combustible”.

  •  Universidad do Porto presented their progresses in the PEMFC-SUDOE project in two congresses, September 2016 and June 2017

Rui B. Ferreira, D.S. Falcão, V.B. Oliveira, A.M.F.R. Pinto, researchers of the Universidad do Porto presented their progresses in the PEMFC-SUDOE project in two congresses. The work “A 1D + 3D Numerical Model of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell”, was presented at 11th Euromech Fluid Mechanics Conference, celebrated in Seville (Spain) in September 2016.
In June 2017, the scientific work “Effects of surfaces wettability on the two-phase flow in the cathode gas channels of a PEM fuel cell”, was presented as a poster contribution at Hyceltec 2017 - VI Symposium on Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Advanced Batteries, celebrated in Porto (Portugal).

  •  13º Congreso Nacional del Medio Ambiente (CONAMA 2016), November 2016, Madrid, Spain

Ariema contributed to the diffusion of the PEMFC SUDOE project with their participation in the 13º Congreso Nacional del Medio Ambiente (CONAMA 2016), celebrated in November 2016 in Madrid, where they presented the poster “Sostenibilidad Energética en la región SUDOE: Red PEMFC-SUDOE”.

In the framework of the "Science Week", an event of scientific dissemination and citizen participation that offers the public the opportunity to get a closer look at the work of scientists, their research, motivations and efforts, the research group "Advanced Separation Processes "of the University of Cantabria presented to students of different levels and to the citizenship the activities that integrate the project SUDOE PEMFC, as well as the accomplishment of some demonstrative experiences for obtaining energy by means of fuel cells derived from the first results of the project.

  •  European Researchers’ Night (NIGHT), Santander, September 30, 2016

The Department of Chemical and Biolomolecular Engineering of the University of Cantabria participates in the European night of researchers 2016.
The members of the research groups offered a demonstration of several research topics to the general public during the night of European researchers as part of the team of the University of Cantabria. In this event the PEMFC SUDOE project was announced among the citizens exposing the poster, as well as a demonstrable fuel cell. The event took place in Plaza de Pombo in Santander, last September 30, 2016.

  • 26 September 2016 : Kick-Off Meeting, University of Cantabria, Spain

On September 26th 2016, the European PEMFC-SUDOE Project consortium partners met in Santander at the University of Cantabria for the official kick-off meeting with the participation of 16 scientists belonging to nine different research centers and companies from the SUDOE region. The event was officially opened by Dr. Javier León Serrano, vice chancellor for research and knowledge transfer of the University of Cantabria, which acts as the main beneficiary of the project and conducted by Dr. Alfredo Ortiz, project coordinator

The main goals of the project, work packages, structures, administrative and financial management and dissemination activities were discussed.

Moreover on 26 and 27 September it took place at the hotel Santemar (Santander) the seminar organized by the joint secretariat of the Interreg SUDOE program on management of projects. The FEDER contract-signing event took place between the legal representative of the University of Cantabria, Dr. Javier León Sanchez and the Counselor of Economy, Finance and Employment of the Government of Cantabria, Juan Jose Sota, management authority of the European Southwest cooperation program.
